As y’all know, the Fringe Bazaar is -yikes- in two weeks! SO in order to prepare yourself, we have worked up an easy guide as how to prepare yourself to the Craft Fair.
In this write-up, we will chat about Marketing and Cupcakes. You’ll see!
MARKETING YOURSELF BEFORE THE EVENT- NOW PAY ATTENTION!
There are a lot of ways you can do your PR thing pre-event. The important thing is that you DON’T skip it. So, first off, you’ll have to write down some DOWN TO EARTH sales goals. Maybe you have some other goals, like you want to increase your mailing list, or you want to network the heak-out! Whatever thoses are, keep them in mind before, into and after the event. Now the challenge is to come up with a PR campaign which will get you to acheive those goals, thus, the planification begins!
Ok. Now the tricky part. I CANNOT give you foulproof-sales-garantied ways to market your products. Sorry, but the best person to do so is yourself; you are the one who knows inside-out your goodies. BUT I can give you ideas in general way:
1- BLOG-BLOG
You have a blog? Great! I assume you have already posted that you will be part of the Fringe Bazaar. Don’t forget time-place! You can also with google maps place in your post a snazzy map. I would put the official flyer somewhere in the margin so it won’t get bump out with new posts.
Also, if you have a blog - which you should have by now if you read the fine lines - you can make a small series like «how I’m preparing myself to the Fringe bazaar», with day-to-day steps. And pictures, people love pictures!
2-MAILING LISTS
Mailing list are cool! The Montreal Craft Mafia uses PHPlist, which is free (you have to download it onto your servor). There are also paying Mailing list online software if you don’t have a servor. So yeah, Mailing list: you should send at least two releases, one like next week, an another as a reminder.
3- ONLINE NETWORKS
Facebook-Myspace… thoses friend-network sites are now a must to a successful marketing campaing. Word to mouth is THE BEST MARKETING WAY EVER. You can now create a group or a fan page of your business, and also an event page to invite your friends to it. It’s kinda like a mailing list, but without the stress of being put into the SPAM folder!
Flickr: they are TONS of Flickr groups in which you can market your products. The Montreal Craft Mafia has one, are YOU in it?
4- FORUMS
Forums: Etsy peeps know already the CRAMPED forums. Hey, I’ve got a solution for you to avoid being drowned down: let’s do a common Fringe Bazaar PR post, and let’s keep it a flow together! You can do the same thing in other forums you participate in.
5- PRESS
Press: Getting press coverage for your goodies can be hard to get. The trick is to have an interesting angle in your press pitch. Don’t just say: I will have my delightfull goodie for sale at the Fringe Bazaar. Say: You too can participate in a handmade life by visiting myself and 60 other fab vendors at the Fringe Bazaar. You know, make you press pitch a larger picture, not just about a sale. Editors LOVE it when you have an interresting angle which they can almost copy/paste. Also, some advices when pitching to blogs and editors: be friendly AND professional. Don’t attach large files to your e-mail if not requested. Try to find the right person to whom you will adress your e-mail. Avoid making spelling errors. Don’t be pushy! And finally, send a thank you note if you get published!
6- PROMO-PROMO-PROMO!
Now, online marketing is mostly very low cost, which is great when you don’t have gazillions to put into ads and promos BUT, in my experience, it’s not enough to have the best PR campain eva’! Here are other things to do:
Print and photocopy the official flyer or make one yourself and go distribute it anywhere you can think of! ALWAYS have them on yourself so you can pass them along. Give them to your jolly-gang so they can help you distribute them.
- Your friend Martha is the biggest mouth on the planet? Why don’t you hire her in exchange for something to be your official spokeperson? I know I would rollover on the floor for cupcakes (see, it WAS about cupcakes also ^_^).
- Make somekind of promo, you know, first 10 clients who buys more that 25$ gets a goodie bag, or people who subscribe to our newsletter get the chance to win in a giveaway. It doesn’t have to be something big, but in my experience, it always helps!
So there you go. There are others things you might come up with and I think that part of being successful in business is by being creative in you PR campaings. Don’t forget to have business cards; don’t just write your email on a piece of paper! Be professional and put some effort into it! If you want some advice on how to create your business cards, check out this post by myself.
Hope it helped! We are into our own PR campain, but with our collective effort, we will make this event successfull and fun!
